On the 11th July 2019, our Maputo partners Media Vital alongside IGPL “Institute of Good Policy and Leadership”, hosted the annual Joaquim Chissano lecture in Maputo, where former President Joaquim Chissano and the first female prime minister of Mozambique Dr Luisa Diogo was hosted on the discussion panel. MAPKZN also participated in support of Media Vital in the topic of conversation for the day which was Good governance and development strategies in Mozambique.
Speaking about good governance, Dr Diogo mentioned that the recent discovery of natural resources in the country had opened a new perspective for the economy, but warned that there should be common ground between leaders and society in generating value out of resources, in a closing statement she emphasized that good governance happens when there is inclusive development.
The event was publicized in multiple media platforms, to ensure it reached all our targeted industry segments. Ukhozi FM “the largest radio station in RSA” was the platform with the biggest reach where we presented the initiative and upcoming event, MAPKZN also utilized the local and national papers to market the event including social media spaces. Post event publications saw the 1KZN tv station reporting on the event, with the Sunday Tribune and Zululand Observer also reporting on the event and what was discussed on the day. All PR activities conducted in KZN were mirrored in the Maputo province, where there were newspaper write ups, tv news interviews and social media publications on the event and coverage of the outcome of the event.
President Chissano as influential and wise as ever, chose to engage the audience with a simple yet powerful phrase “Vikela” meaning protect in Shangane, in a context of Mozambicans setting an African example, on the protection of its resources, economy and values, and further making bad leadership accountable. These ingredients being key attributes in starting a path of building a future for Mozambique and relations with its neighboring regions such as KwaZulu Natal through the recently established corridor link.
